Doris Bloodsworth to Share Media Release Tips at October Meeting of FWA-Orlando

You’ve written the next New York Times bestseller; but can you write an effective media release to let the world know?

If not, you’ll want to attend the October 3 meeting of the Orlando Area Writers Group (Florida Writers Association), when group member Doris Bloodsworth presents “How to Get Media Attention for Your Book.”

Doris is a Pulitzer-nominated writer and University of Florida graduate who reported for The Wall Street Journal and the Orlando Sentinel before entering the world of marketing and public relations. She is the president of Crosswords Communications Company in Orlando and writes a monthly column for Lake magazine.

One of her recent projects was the July 4th opening of the Groveland Historical Museum in Groveland, where she grew up. With that event, Doris made the front pages of the Lake Sentinel (the Lake County edition of the Orlando Sentinel), The Reporter (published by the Lakeland Ledger), and The Daily Commercial in Leesburg. She also got stories in two magazines.

“My success was based on understanding what is newsworthy, recognizing good photo opportunities, knowing the publications’ deadlines, and researching the names and contact preferences of specific reporters and editors,” she says—information she will share during the evening as she discusses how to craft an effective media release that ends up in the paper, not a reporter’s delete folder!

Doris promises to allow plenty of time for our questions and for sharing war stories. We’re even invited to bring a release to have critiqued or to create one during the workshop for comment.

Join Doris and the Orlando Writers Group on Wednesday, October 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the University Club of Winter Park. The University Club is located at 841 Park Avenue North, on the northwest corner of Park and Webster Avenue. The program is free and open to the public. For additional information, visit the group blog at or contact Stephen Evans, group leader— or 407-898-4299.
